telc B1 Reading and Listening: Practice Strategy

In telc B1 comprehension, choose the answer supported by the text. A familiar keyword or a plausible real-life assumption is not enough. Reading shares 90 minutes with language elements; keep that combined workload in mind.

Match the whole situation

For each person in an advertisement task, mark the conditions that cannot change: time, location, experience, price or purpose. Then test the advertisement against every condition. An offer can match the subject but fail the requirement. Do not assume a service exists merely because it would be normal for that type of business.

Original matching example

A: Sprachcafé für Fortgeschrittene. Dienstagvormittag, Teilnahme kostenlos. B: Gesprächsgruppe ab B1. Mittwochabend, fünf Euro pro Treffen. Anmeldung erforderlich.

Original task: Max is at B1 level, works Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:00, wants conversation practice and can spend up to eight euros per meeting. B matches the stated time and price; he must still register. A is free but takes place during work. If the situation required a free evening group, neither advertisement would satisfy all conditions. Whether you may select “no match” depends on the actual task instructions.

Original listening script: a new venue

Die Informationsveranstaltung war im Rathaus geplant. Wegen Bauarbeiten treffen wir uns jetzt in der Schule gegenüber. Die Anfangszeit, 18 Uhr, bleibt gleich. Bitte benutzen Sie den Eingang am Parkplatz.

Have a partner read this original script aloud with the text covered. Identify what changed and what stayed the same. The venue changed to the school; the start remains 18:00. The car park identifies the entrance, not a third venue. Follow the official audio instructions during a timed paper; extra replay belongs to review.

Record the reason for a wrong choice

Use three columns: my answer, the supporting or contradicting phrase, and the next drill. If you missed gegenüber, practise location phrases. If you heard Rathaus and stopped listening, practise corrections and changes. Repeating a full paper without studying these causes may improve familiarity with that paper while leaving the underlying difficulty untouched.
