telc B1 Language Elements: Explained Gap Exercises
Practise telc B1 language elements with original gap exercises and explanations for connectors, prepositions and sentence structure in context.
Sprachbausteine tests grammar and vocabulary inside a text. Read beyond the gap before choosing a word. A grammatically possible option can still express the wrong relationship between two ideas.
Use meaning first, then grammar
Read the whole message once to identify who is writing and why. For each gap, ask what is missing: a reason, a contrast, a preposition, a verb or a reference to a person. Check the words before and after the gap. Finally read the completed sentence aloud in practice. Do not decide from a memorized phrase while ignoring the rest of the message.
Original exercise: choose a connector
Früher habe ich abends gearbeitet. Jetzt arbeite ich nur vormittags und habe abends Zeit. Die neue Arbeitszeit ist der Grund, warum ich zum Abendkurs kommen kann. Ich kann am Kurs teilnehmen, ___ meine Arbeitszeit geändert wurde. A: weil B: obwohl C: damit
The context explicitly gives the new working hours as the reason attendance is possible. A, weil, gives that reason. Obwohl would express a contrast; damit would introduce a purpose that does not fit this statement about a completed change. The final verb “wurde” also helps you recognize the subordinate-clause structure, but meaning decides among these choices.
Original exercise: a preposition after a verb
Ich interessiere mich ___ den Abendkurs. A: an B: für C: mit
B is correct: sich interessieren für. Learn the phrase with a useful sentence, not just a disconnected preposition. Compare “Ich nehme an dem Kurs teil.” Both sentences concern a course but use different verb patterns. Changing only the preposition without checking the verb creates a common error. These examples are original teaching drills, not official telc items.
Keep an error notebook you can reuse
- Write the whole corrected sentence and a short reason.
- Group errors by connector, verb-preposition pattern, case or word choice.
- Write a second sentence about your own situation using the same pattern.
- After a day, complete a new gap without looking at the rule.
- Include language elements in a timed reading-and-language-elements session, not only isolated drills.
