Goethe A2: Exam Format, Scores and Study Routine
Prepare for the adult Goethe A2 exam with a clear timing table, the written and oral pass thresholds and an original everyday-language exercise.
Goethe A2 asks you to handle familiar everyday situations with more detail than at A1. You read and listen, write short messages, talk about your life and make arrangements with another person. This guide concerns the adult examination.
Time and focus
| Part | Time | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 30 minutes | Relevant details in everyday written texts |
| Listening | About 30 minutes | Conversations, messages and announcements |
| Writing | 30 minutes | Short messages for specific recipients |
| Speaking | 15 minutes | Questions, personal account and joint planning |
Check both score thresholds
Passing requires at least 60 of 100 points, including at least 45 of 75 in the written examination and 15 of 25 in speaking, with all parts completed. A good written result cannot replace an oral result below its threshold. During preparation, record the written and oral results separately instead of relying only on an average.
Build connected answers
Practise explaining a simple reason and proposing an alternative. If you cannot attend an appointment, say why and suggest another time. In a conversation, respond to what your partner actually says. Prepare flexible sentence beginnings, but change the information for each task so your answer fits the recipient, date and purpose.
Original exercise: change an appointment
Hallo Max, ich kann heute um 16 Uhr nicht zum Lernen kommen, weil ich länger arbeiten muss. Hast du morgen um 17 Uhr Zeit? Wir können uns in der Bibliothek treffen. Viele Grüße, Anna
This is an original teaching message. Identify the old time, the proposed new time and the suggested place. Then answer as Max: either accept or explain that you are busy and offer another time. Do not simply repeat Anna’s proposal. A useful response shows whether the new arrangement works. Compare your response with a partner and ask them to state the agreed time without guessing.
Use practice to choose the next lesson
Complete a sample section, then sort mistakes into vocabulary, grammar, missed detail and time pressure. Work on one cause before taking another full set. Confirm local registration and result procedures with your centre. For the exact answer-sheet layout and task instructions, use the official adult practice materials linked below.
