DTZ Listening: Practice, Traps and Review
Prepare for DTZ listening with an original announcement, explained answers and a review routine for numbers, changes and speaker opinions.
DTZ listening lasts about 25 minutes and contains 20 tasks in four parts. You hear each text once. Practise following the speaker to the end: a number or place mentioned first may be corrected later.
For the DTZ answer sheets, use a non-erasable ballpoint pen with blue or black ink. Pencils are not permitted. Follow the invigilator’s instructions for marking or correcting an answer.
Read the question before the audio
Identify what you need: the departure time, the reason for a call or a speaker’s opinion. Compare the choices before listening. If all three choices name places, listen for the final destination rather than trying to remember every word. Keep your pen at the current question so a missed answer does not also cost you the next one.
The four parts include short announcements, brief information, conversations and statements about a shared topic. In conversations, distinguish the overall situation from a specific detail. In opinion tasks, follow what the speaker approves or rejects; hearing the topic word alone does not identify their position.
Original listening drill: a changed platform
This is an original teaching example, not an official exam task or an audio recording. Ask a partner to read it once while you keep the transcript covered. Question: Where does the train leave? A: platform 4. B: platform 7. C: platform 9.
Achtung, eine Änderung: Der Zug nach Bremen um 9 Uhr fährt heute nicht von Gleis 4, sondern von Gleis 7. Die Abfahrtszeit bleibt gleich.
Answer B is correct. The announcement replaces platform 4 with platform 7. Nine refers to the time, not a platform. Write the relation in your error notebook: “nicht … sondern …” introduces a correction. On the next day, ask your partner to change the places and time so you must understand the message again rather than remember B.
Review once the timed attempt is finished
- Record your first answer before replaying anything. Replays belong to learning, not the timed score.
- Use the transcript after answering. Mark the words that rule out each distractor.
- Separate sound problems from meaning problems: confusing sieben with zehn needs a different drill from missing a negation.
- Transfer answers within the allowed section time. g.a.s.t. assesses the answer sheet, not notes left in the booklet.
